Organic Sumatra
Region: Asia (Sumatra) - Gayo Organic Farmers Association
Our Sumatra offers low acidity, a syrupy body with concentrated spicy, herbal notes and earthy aroma, as well as flavor.
This celebrated coffee is grown in the mountains and valleys surrounding Lake Tawar (in the Aceh province of northern Sumatra). Beginning in the 18th century, Sumatrau coffee's popularity rose significantly, and its full flavor has made it highly desirable ever since. Distinct characteristics (including an unusual shape and jade coloring) helped European merchants spot authentic Sumatran beans.
Although its physical features are extraordinary, Sumatra's appearance is not the coffee's only unique quality. It is believed that unusual drying techniques such as prolonging the bean's exposure to the pulp of the cherry after harvesting, help to create deeper tones in the cup.
The Cayo Organic Farmers Association is a cooperative that is committed to growing only organic beans. Using the funds from their coffee sales, the group has been able to institute programs to bring clean drinking water to their community, repair homes that have been destroyed during war and construct new schools.
